Gas leak safety

What should I do first if I smell gas inside?

Get everyone out of the house, including pets. Do not use light switches, phones, lighters or garage door openers inside. Once you are outside and away from the house, call 911 or your gas utility, then call us for the repair.

What does natural gas smell like?

Natural gas has no smell on its own. Utilities add an odorant that smells like rotten eggs or sulfur so leaks can be noticed.

Can a gas leak make me sick?

Breathing leaking gas can cause headaches, dizziness and nausea, and a leaking or poorly vented appliance can produce carbon monoxide. If anyone feels ill, get outside and call 911.

Is it safe to stay home with a faint gas smell?

A faint smell still needs a check. Call us, describe where and when you notice it, and we will help you decide whether to stay or leave while we come out.

Finding gas leaks

How do you find a gas leak?

We use an electronic gas detector along lines and fittings, a bubble solution on joints and a pressure test of the whole system. Together they tell us whether there is a leak and exactly where it is.

What is a gas line pressure test?

The gas piping is closed off, filled with air to a set pressure and watched on a gauge. If the pressure holds, the system is tight. If it drops, there is a leak. More about pressure testing.

Can you find a leak in a buried gas line?

Yes. We test the buried section on its own, trace its route and check the surface with a detector before digging only where the leak is. Underground gas line repair.

Why does my gas bill keep going up?

Rates and seasonal use change bills, but a rise with no change in how you use appliances can point to a leak. A pressure test is a quick way to rule it out.

Repairs and installation

Do you repair or replace gas lines?

Both. Most leaks are at fittings and valves and can be repaired. When piping has corroded along long runs or keeps leaking, we explain why replacement may be the better choice.

Can you run a gas line for a new appliance?

Yes. We size the line for the appliance and everything else on the system, install it and pressure test it. Gas line installation.

Do you hook up gas stoves and dryers?

Yes. We install a new connector, check the shut-off valve, test every joint for leaks and light the appliance before we leave.

Do you install gas lines for BBQs and fire pits?

Yes. We plan the route, trench, install buried gas pipe and connect each outdoor appliance. Outdoor gas lines.

What is a seismic gas shut-off valve?

A valve at the meter that closes on its own during strong shaking, stopping gas from flowing into the house if lines are damaged.

Cost and scheduling

How much does a gas leak repair cost?

It depends on where the leak is, how hard it is to reach, the pipe material, how much needs replacing and whether a permit is needed. Our cost guide explains each factor.

Will you tell me the cost before you start?

Yes. Once we find the problem, we go over the work and the cost factors with you before any repair begins.

Are you open on weekends and holidays?

Yes. Our phones are answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays.

The gas company and our service area

What is the difference between the gas company and a gas plumber?

The gas utility owns the meter and the line up to it. The piping after the meter, including every appliance connection, belongs to the property owner, and that is what a gas plumber repairs.

Which gas company serves my home?

Most homes in our area are served by SoCalGas. Long Beach and Signal Hill are served by Long Beach Utilities, and some homes near the Long Beach border are too. Your gas bill shows your utility.

Which cities do you serve?

We serve Cerritos and nearby cities including Artesia, Norwalk, Lakewood, Bellflower, La Palma, Buena Park, Cypress, Hawaiian Gardens, Downey, La Mirada and East Long Beach. See all areas.
